About

Passionately pursuing the workings of the world

Hello, my name is Arnav Mujumdar. I'm a second-year undergraduate Physics major at the University of Florida. I serve as the Secretary of UF's chapter of the Society of Physics Students. My research interests include astrophysics and particle physics projects; I am currently conducting computational research on gravitational waves in UF's LISA Group.

Detection of the Displacement Gravitational Wave Memory Effect of LIGO Binaries in LISA Data Streams

When a very massive object is accelerated near the speed of light, such as during a merger of two black holes, it radiates gravitational waves (GWs) that propagate through space at the speed of light. GWs are ripples in spacetime that temporarily displace matter they pass through. General relativity predicts the displacement gravitational memory effect, in which a smaller permanent displacement in spacetime is caused by the propagation of GWs. However, this memory effect has not yet been experimentally verified. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a planned space-based gravitational-wave observatory that is expected to be able to detect gravitational memory. This project involves conducting simulations of black hole mergers throughout the universe and determining how long it should take LISA to detect gravitational memory using triggers from ground-based GW detectors.
